These tools help you master tonal languages and abugida scripts
These tools have been designed after having both studied and taught many languages – particularly tonal languages across Asia including Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese and dialects across the region. The tools are particularly suited to the needs of tonal languages and/or foreign scripts that are based on the Indic / Brahmic Abugida. Watch this video first so you can see how to make the most of the tools for your language. Where I demonstrate in one language, in many cases these methods will be transferrable across to your target language.
What you see right now is my Tool Shed — a growing collection of interactive tools to help you master tonal languages and Abugida-based scripts like Thai, Lao, Burmese, Hindi, Sanskrit, and beyond. These tools are designed to help you understand how sound, tone, structure, and script actually work — across multiple languages — and how they interact in your mouth, throat and brain.
The Tool Shed is just the beginning. It's the first step in the larger vision of Cracking Language Fundamentals (CLF) — a full learning system built to replace rote memorisation and generic language apps with something that actually works for Asian and tonal languages.
Most mainstream language platforms were built for European languages. They're not equipped to deal with what makes languages like Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese or Khmer actually work. They often miss or oversimplify things like tones, particles, sentence rhythm, pitch accents, and the role of native writing systems.
In many of these languages, small mistakes in tone or prosody don’t just make you sound foreign — they make you incomprehensible. Unlike English or French, there's often far less tolerance for mispronunciation or unusual rhythm. This is where many learners give up. CLF is designed to prevent that.
CLF provides books, videos, interactive exercises, diagnostic tools and full lesson frameworks — all built around a system of Cornerstones. These are the critical knowledge domains that govern how a language works: pronunciation, tone, meaning-making, phonetic awareness, native script fluency, and more.
Depending on your language background, you’ll already have strengths in some areas and gaps in others. CLF helps you identify those gaps and fill them. The more you build, the faster you learn — and the easier it is to transfer that knowledge to other languages later.
This platform is the next evolution of my Cracking Thai Fundamentals programme, and is heavily informed by my work through Mindkraft. It’s about giving you an internal operating system that aligns with how these languages actually function — so that native speakers understand you, and you understand them.
If you're learning Thai, you can access the full set of online resources through the Cracking Thai Fundamentals Unlimited Bundle . For the hardcopy book, you can order within Thailand , or if you're overseas, get it from Amazon .
